Cultured Pearls.
There are four main types of cultured pearl, including Freshwater pearls and three types of saltwater pearl known as Akoya pearls, Tahitian pearls and South Sea pearls.
The Japanese businessman Kokichi Mikimoto first brought cultured pearls to the market. Mikimoto was fascinated by pearls from a young age and it was he who created the world's first cultured Akoya pearl in 1893.
Akoya Pearls. Since the 1930’s, Akoya pearls are the world's best-known pearl. The Akoya Pearl necklace is known the world over as “The Classic Pearl Necklace” and prices for these range from the high hundreds to thousands. The saltwater Akoya pearl gleams with its trademark bright, mirror-like lustre and features a subtle array of flattering pearl overtones in rose, silver and cream.
Akoya pearls are often very round and spherical in shape and are complemented by very high lustre. Produced by a small oyster called the Pinctada Fucata off the seas of Japan and China, they are commonly found in sizes ranging from 2mm to 10mm in size.
Akoya pearls are a long-time favourite in the pearl industry and are commonly worn by brides on their wedding day and indeed both formally and casually in recent years.
